When looking at different fence stain colors there are certain things you are going to want to consider. You are going to want to take into consideration what you are wanting the finished product to look like. There are tons of different options when it comes to picking a good stain to use on your fence. There are paints that do not allow wood grain to show through. There are transparent stains that keep the wood looking natural just provides a layer of protection to keep the wood from getting old grey, and mildewed. You are also going to have your line of semi-transparent deck stains, and semi-transparent fence stains that are going to show the wood grain but also add a level of tint to the wood to give it a nice clean look. Depending on what you are looking to accomplish I am sure you are going to find the perfect stain out there with all the options available to you. Now that you have a starting place to begin your project I want to take a second to give some advice regarding staining your deck or fence. DO NOT apply stain or paint to an untreated deck or fence. You are going to have to pressure wash your fence before you do anything. If you just start painting or staining over dirty, grey, mildewed wood you are not going to be happy with the results. So after you pressure wash your fence and get everything cleaned up you are going to want to wait 24 hours for the wood to dry. You do not want to wait too long or else the spores of the wood will close and it wont except stain or paint as well as it could.
A huge tip that a lot of beginners find out the hard way is to spend the extra money to get a good deck stain or fence paint if you go cheap with something like Thompsons waterseal you are going to be re-doing the job in a couple months….. and probably end up spending more time and money in the long run. When you use a quality product like behr or wolman than you are not going to need to maintain your deck or fence for 4-5 years.
