Bolen makes a pretty decent little lawn edger. If you are a home owner or if you own a lawn care business then you will be able to get a lot of use from the bolen lawn edger. A good lawn edger is going to take that freshly mowed yard and trim up the edges giving it a more professional look. Having a well manicured lawn also increases your property value and the appearance of your home. You will be very satisfied looking at your freshly cut lawn and seeing how nice and tidy it turned out while you enjoy the smell of fresh cut grass. When you mow your lawn and skip on the edging it is like getting a hair cut but not getting the back and sides edged up. It is effective but it doesn’t look good. If this is your first time with a lawn edger be sure to read the full instructions as these machines can be dangerous and may even cause injury.
A few things you are going to want in your bolen lawn edger. You are going to want a unit that is going to start up easily and everytime. I recommend that you try and start the machine before you buy it. If you are unable to then no reason buying it if you cant use it.
I suggest staying away from electric edgers or battery powered edgers as they are just not going to have enough power to effectively do the job like you want. The 3.5 hp bolen gas lawn edger is a good powerful machine that wont have you wishing you had more power. You will know the difference quickly if you have been using a hand held edger or even a less powerful one.
One great safety feature I recommend checking into is the blade disengage. This is important because this is going to allow your edger to continue running without the blade spinning. This makes it a lot safer and easier to move around while you are mowing your lawn.
Most of the bolen edgers are going to be wheeled which I suggest just so its easier to stay balanced and have straight edges against the driveway and also the curbs and sidewalks. Some of the one wheeled units are cheaper 4 wheeled units are extremely hard to keep straight making your edging uneven.
Another few safety tips. You should look for the bolen unit that has the most available safety features such as blade guards automatic cut off , and debris deflectors. Having these extra safety bells and whistles seems like overkill but you will be thankful if you have ever used a machine without these additional features.
These are some of the things that I looked for when I got my lawn edger. Bolen made a great edger that I have had great success with. I know there are some higher end models out there but for the average home owner any of bolens lawn edgers are going to work great.
